In oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation and shipbuilding facilities, flange leakage is rarely just a gasket problem. Corrosion, radial scratches, pitting and thermal distortion can prevent uniform gasket contact. Flange facing is the controlled machining process used to restore the sealing face to the required flatness, geometry and surface profile before the joint is reassembled.
A modern flange facing machine mounts directly on the component and moves a cutting tool across the flange face. Unlike uncontrolled grinding, precision machining can generate a consistent serrated finish while removing only the material necessary to eliminate damage. Depending on its configuration and tooling, the machine may also perform seal-groove machining, weld preparation and counterboring.
How Should a Flange Facer Be Selected?
Machine selection should begin with the actual facing diameter, mounting diameter and required surface profile – not nominal pipe size alone. The three TAOLE models below use internal mounting and support flat facing, seal grooves, spiral or concentric patterns, weld preparation and counterboring. Their different working envelopes make them suitable for progressively larger flanges.
| Model | Mounting | Facing range | Mounting range | Feed stroke | Tool swivel | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| WFH-610 | ID mount | 50-610 mm | 50-508 mm | 50 mm | ±30° | 0-42 rpm |
| WFP-1000 | ID mount | 153-1,000 mm | 145-813 mm | 102 mm | ±30° | 0-33 rpm |
| WFS-2000 | ID mount | 762-2,000 mm | 604-1,830 mm | 102 mm | ±30° | 0-22 rpm |
Technical Selection Notes
The WFH-610 is the compact option for smaller flanges, while the WFP-1000 extends the facing range to 1,000 mm. For large vessel, valve and heat-exchanger work, the WFS-2000 reaches a 2,000 mm facing diameter. All three list a ±30° tool-holder swivel, supporting controlled machining of sealing surfaces and grooves.
Surface finish remains critical. A flange should not simply be made as smooth as possible: roughness, serration pattern and flatness must match the gasket and project specification. Before ordering, buyers should submit flange drawings, required facing and mounting diameters, target finish, material, working position and available power source. This prevents undersized mounting systems and ensures the selected portable flange facing machine can produce the required geometry safely on site.
